New emissions policy

The EPA has reversed a Bush administration policy on emissions standards, "clearing the way for California and at least 13 other states...to impose restrictions on automobile greenhouse gas emissions that exceed federal limits," according to a July 1st article in the Houston Chronicle.

The decision fits with Obama's plan to institute emission standards after negotiations with automakers and various states, including California.

The move will help the auto industry produce the cars needed for a cleaner America, cutting emissions by 30 percent by 2016.

"Emissions from motor vehicles make up roughly a quarter of the nation's total greenhouse gas emissions," the article states. That's a big chunk of current output.

This will lead to both cleaner air and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

The rules will be established by March 30th of next year and will apply to all car models made between 2012 and 2016.
